Wilbur Daniels had been a homesteader for several years without paying taxes. Now Crossville council, in the form of the tax collector, is demanding that Wilbur and the other homesteaders start paying. They are up in arms but find unexpected support from the ex-sheriff, Luke Tilling, who has now become the town drunk after suffering a personal tragedy. As the arguments boil over into a fully fledged conflict, bullets begin to fly and a powerful land owner seizes his chance of getting rid of the homesteaders.
