Whilst the railways were originally developed as a means primarily of moving raw materials and freight between source and customer, it was not long before passenger traffic was also recognised as an important additional source of revenue. Of the many changes which have occurred in the railway industry in the years since the 1940s, perhaps the most dramatic is the shift away from freight as the railways main source of income, as road haulage became more dominant. Today, for much of the railway network of the British Isles, passenger traffic is the main, sometimes the only, source of revenue. Whilst, in the early 21st century, freight traffic is but a fraction of that achieved in the 1950s, passenger traffic has reached levels not seen since the 1950s and 60s when the network was significantly larger. In 1948, British Railways inherited myriad coaches from the Big Four companies. From the early 1950s, standardisation was imposed with, initially, the Mark 1 design, later further developed to produce the Mark 2 and Mark 3 models from the early 1960s onwards. From the mid-1970s onwards, the trend has been for locomotive-hauled stock to be gradually replaced by HSTs, used nationwide, the InterCity 225s designed for use on the electrified East Coast main line and a wide range of diesel and electric multiple units of varying sizes and specifications. Today, a conventional locomotive hauled passenger train is a comparative rarity. In his second contribution on coaching stock to the highly successful In Colour for the Modeller and Historian series, railway historian and photographer Robert Hendry, portrays the great variety of coaching stock visible on Britain s railways in the years after 1960 and the liveries they carried. Incorporating some 175 colour illustrations, the book s content ranges from Big Four survivors through to the Mark 4s used on the East Coast main line.
