Other contributors go on to discuss the reception of fakes, in China as well as in Europe and North America, and to explore their significance as evidence for the history of taste, the development of the art market and the use of connoisseurship to establish social and intellectual status. In the end, though, fakes do more than upset the art market; they threaten to undermine our grip on reality itself. The volume ends by examining this problem in a challenging essay on authenticity, which questions whether the assumptions which allow us to distinguish the genuine from the false have any secure foundation.
