Inscriptions are an important form of evidence for our interpretation of past human societies. This book, based on the collection of ancient Greek inscriptions on stone and metal held at the British Museum, constitutes an introduction to the study of ancient Greek inscriptions, their significance for our understanding of ancient Greek culture, their history and their reception in the modern world. It places emphasis on the texts of the inscriptions, their physical form, their importance in understanding the ancient Greek language and the modern history of their collection.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Peter Liddel is Professor of Greek History and Epigraphy at the University of Manchester where he has lectured since 2004. He has published two monographs on ancient Greek history (Civic Obligation and Individual Liberty in Ancient Athens, Oxford, 2007; Decrees of Fourth-Century Athens, 2 volumes, Cambridge, 2020). He has co-edited three volumes of essays on ancient history and has published numerous articles on Greek history and epigraphy, including publications and editions of newly discovered Greek inscriptions from Athens, the Megarid, Asia Minor and Northern Mesopotamia.
