Dr. T.W. Potter was in charge of the British Museum's Romano-British collections from 1978, and was Keeper of the Department of Prehistoric and Romano-British Antiquities from 1995 until his death at the beginning of 2000. He was the author of more than fifteen books and around a hundred papers on many aspects of Roman archaeology, and had conducted numerous fieldwork and excavation projects in Britain, Italy and Algeria. Dr Catherine Johns has been a curator of the Romano-British collections in the British Museum since 1967. She has researched, taught and published extensively on Roman art and artefacts, especially on jewellery and silverware.

The vast empire created by the Romans remains one of the outstanding achievements of history. This text assesses the impact of the invasion of AD 43 on Iron-Age Britain and surveys the effect of Roman culture on this remote province up to and beyond the end of the military occupation.
