"Approaches European porcelain of the eighteenth century from a new angle, avoiding the usual lsiting of factories and their output. After briefly defining porcelain and giving the history of its development in Europe, the authors discuss the technological aspect and the importance of porcelain as an international commodity. Another chapter deals with the influence of Chinese and Japanese porcelain on the West. The authors then turn to the factories themselves, considering them first as centres of production and secondly as artistic centres. The principal artists and craftsmen are then briefly reviewed. The main part of the book, however, is concerned with an examination of the different forms of European porcelain -- drinking vessels, dinner services, decorative pieces and curios -- and with a study of their iconography. The authors show the wide-ranging influence of certain iconographical themes in European porcelain in relation to cultural and historical events." (dj).
