Remember when you didn't take physics in high school because you thought you weren't smart enough to "get it"? Here is a reference source that aims to make this complex topic accessible to an even younger audience, grades five through ten.

The set consists of 10 volumes covering broad subjects such as "Matter," "Heat," "Sound," and "Electric Current." The dozen or so more-discreet topics within each volume are treated in two to six pages. Half of the page space is text, and the rest is devoted to photographs, illustrations, and captions that explain the text more fully. There may also be biographical sidebars that briefly profile important scientists. The narrative is very clear, avoiding the use of complicated terminology. Scientific terms are defined in the text when they are first used, and there is a glossary of terms unique to each volume. Each volume also includes a set index and at least six volume-specific "student projects" that reference relevant topics discussed in the main text.

This is an excellent set for every school and public library. Though written for the middle-school level, it will be appreciated by a wide range of physics-challenged readers. The illustrations and color photographs are striking and help the user understand how the concepts discussed in the text apply to life situations. The projects are simple, and most won't require adult supervision, though adults will have as much fun with them as kids will.
