Rezensionen

Large, clear type font, abundant color illustrations, and generous column width make this treatment of the American frontier appropriate for the designated audience of grades seven through nine. It covers "the many frontiers that together make up the earliest settled regions of what is now the United States, from the first contacts between Europeans and Native Americans to the closing of the frontier in the late 1800s."

The first two volumes present the overall history of the American frontier, with volume 2 containing a chronology of key events and a map of the lower 48 states. Volumes 3 through 10 offer alphabetically organized articles on events, people, and places. Each state is given a separate entry with a "Quick Frontier Facts" box. State entries are longer than the general entries, which vary in length from one to three columns. Articles are adequately cross--referenced, with related subjects noted in small capitals. There are also longer articles that cover wider subjects, such as "Water on the Frontier" or "The Oregon Trail."

Each volume has its own table of contents, with maps noted, and a full, accurate set index. Volume 10 has a lengthy list of Web sites, current as of early 2004, and a print bibliography of mostly adult works.

The writing style is brisk and engaging enough to hold the attention of younger researchers. Coverage is evenhanded. There is no other student-level resource that covers this aspect of American history in such depth, and the set is a sound addition to school libraries as well as to public libraries with heavy young adult use. Grade 5-8–Volume one of this clearly written, straightforward set includes information on the migration of Native Americans from Asia to North America as well as exploration and settlement by the Norse, Spanish, French, British, Dutch, Swedish, Germans, Scotch-Irish, and Russians. It concludes with an account of the French and Indian War. Volume two covers the period from after 1763 to the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. Volumes 3 to 10 are an alphabetical, encyclopedic series of entries covering individuals, groups, events, places, individual states, and more. State entries include an article and a fact box listing Native Americans of the area, the history of its name, earliest European visitors, etc. In-depth entries on such topics as the "California Gold Rush," "Jewish Americans on the Frontier," and the "Trail of Tears" are printed on yellow pages and highlighted in each volume's table of contents. Cross-references and quotes from primary sources are scattered throughout. Each volume includes illustrations on every page (mostly captioned paintings and drawings), a few photos and maps, and a set index. The final volume concludes with an extensive list of Internet sites. A useful resource for both students researching the topic and for browsers.–Ginny Gustin, Sonoma County Library System, Santa Rosa, CA
