Grade 4-6. Well adapted to classroom and library use, this multivolume atlas will be a worthwhile addition to reference collections large or limited. Volume one is devoted to explanations of 50 terms that describe physical features, from "Basin" to "Wetlands." Three volumes cover the U.S. (a political, a physical, and a cultural atlas); the world political atlas is broken into three volumes by region (Africa and Asia, Australia and Europe, and North and South America); the final three volumes consist of a world physical atlas, a world cultural atlas, and a world and U.S. history atlas. Each map is enhanced by a descriptive paragraph or two plus a flag or a fact column, where appropriate, and, occasionally, an inset city map. Each volume concludes with both an individual index or gazetteer and a one-page subject index to the set; six volumes also feature a 15-page "Mapskills" unit that explains projections, key symbols, latitude and longitude, and related topics. Intended for unpracticed users, the maps are models of utility and clarity, all keyed, printed in pale but clearly contrasted colors, and well labeled without looking busy. U.S. maps fill no fewer than four volumes of the set, and lines such as, "Vietnam has made significant progress in recent years, moving away from a planned economic system" reveal another sort of slant; still, students delving into a vast array of research topics, particularly those related to our country's physical, economic, or historical geography, will find this an invaluable source, both for visual information and expert instruction in map reading and analysis.?John Peters, New York Public Library

In this ten-volume work, Grolier has produced a splendid geographic source for students. Each 80-page volume has a specific focus: a glossary of map terms, a U.S. political atlas, a U.S. physical atlas, a U.S. cultural atlas, a world political atlas (in three books), a world physical atlas, a world cultural atlas, and a U.S. and world history atlas. Volumes 1, 3, 4, and 8-10 include the same "MapSkills" section to help young readers interpret the wide variety of physical and thematic maps. Aside from the recent reversion of Zaire to the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has once again rendered all atlases out-of-date, the color maps, national flags, and data found here are clearly presented and current. One serious factual flaw noted was the entry for Bosnia & Herzegovina: the results of the Dayton Accord are ignored, and it is stated that "Serbs control about 70% of Bosnian territory" rather than the post-settlement 49 percent. More important, the price may be prohibitive for many libraries (despite the discount for two or more sets at $299 each). But while the 304-page DK Geography of the World (DK, 1996) is a reasonable alternative at $39.95, it is not nearly so versatile and instructive. Thus, Maps of the World is highly recommended for all school and public libraries.?Edward K. Werner, St. Lucie Cty. Lib. Sys., Ft. Pierce, Fla.
