Although Black Beauty has been regarded as a children’s story due to its use of a horse as first-person narrator, the classic work has appealed to adults as well since its first publication. Nor was the novel intended for children alone. Sewell professed her hope that the story would be a positive influence on the treatment of horses in the 19th century. The popularity of Black Beauty did contribute to a greater awareness of the treatment of animals. In addition, the innate morality, gentleness, and quiet endurance of its protagonist provide a model for the treatment of other human beings.
Biografía del autor
Anna Mary Sewell was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England into a devoutly Quaker family. Her father was Isaac Phillip Sewell (1793-1879), and her mother, Mary Wright Sewell (1798 - 1884) was a successful author of children's books.
