Nero, suspecting Quistus's sympathy with Christian 'terrorists', blackmails him into guarding fiery Christian Princess Claudia on a peace mission to Britain, a quest accompanied not only by the murderer, but also by a malign prosecutor, and a second princess very different from the first. But only when a third princess is revealed does Quistus understand the delicacy and awfulness of his task, and its historic importance to both Rome and Britain.
