With the exception of Mount Desert Island's Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, the lighthouses of Bar Harbor and the Acadia region are among the most remote and lesser-known lighthouses of Maine. As the vessel traffic changed in these areas in the early 1900s, some of these lighthouses were sold into private ownership while others became less important as aids to navigation. Timothy E. Harrison is the editor and publisher of Lighthouse Digest magazine and cofounder of the American Lighthouse Foundation, which he served as president of from 1994 through 2007. He is also the founder of the Museum of Lighthouse History, which in 2007 merged with the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland. As the author or coauthor of seven lighthouse books, he has given hundreds of lectures and dedicated his life to locating, documenting, and preserving lighthouse history for future generations.
