Title: Postcards from the past: Book celebrates Hudson history
Author: Rosemary Rimkus
Publisher: Hudson Wicked Local
Date: 12/04/2008

The most daunting task of compiling the "Hudson Postcards" book was locating more than 200 different postcard views of Hudson people, places and events, according to author Lew Halprin of the Hudson Historical Society.

Copies of the handsome pictorial, published by Arcadia Publishing and costing $22, will be on sale this weekend at book signings during the Downtown Holiday Stroll tomorrow (Dec. 5) in a Main Street storefront, and Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Christmas Open House at the Society Museum, Hudson Mill Center, Broad St.

Halprin, who has co-authored eight area-related Arcadia books in the "Images in America" and "Postcard" series, said the Society collection of Hudson-related postcards included many duplicates, and not sufficient numbers of various views. A call went out to Society members and known collectors, and area residents volunteered to loan their cards.

"Once we had enough cards, and the chore of writing informational captions was accomplished, the task became fun again," said Halprin. He praised Society historian Kay Johnson for her "invaluable contributions to the captions and cataloging," in the year-long task. Halprin said the book is available "just in time for holiday giving."

Prior to "Hudson Postcards," books co-authored by Halprin and the Society include an "Images of America" Hudson book; two Lake Boon books, with the assistance of Alan Kattelle; Stow, Maynard and Assabet Mills books, with assistance from Paul Boothroyd; and Hudson National Guard book, co-authored by the late William Verdone.

"Years ago, postcards were the way people had pictures of their travels," said Johnson, who facilitated an illustrated presentation by Halprin of the 128-page book at the Nov. 25 Society meeting.

"You could visit Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon... and then send a one-penny postcard to your friends to document your travels," said Johnson. Some of the historic cards in the book include the sender's message and recipient's address.

Johnson estimated that about one-third of the contents of "Hudson Postcards" was borrowed to augment the Museum collection. Cards were loaned by Paul Polewacyk of Marlborough, Hudson firefighter Robert O'Hare, Hudson resident Bill Bishop Jr., and Hudson barber Vic Mackiewicz. Editorially overseeing the captions with historian Johnson were Jeannette Pauplis, Meg Fillmore and other Society members.

Hudson's historic old homes, including the Apsley and Beede mansions and the Harriman School built in 1891, are included in the pictorial history . Originally called the Myrtle Street School (Myrtle St. was renamed for Hudson industrialist L. D. Apsley), the brick building now houses the Hudson School administration offices.

Postcards of Hudson's trademark Wood Square and Rotary Circle include pictures taken at the turn of the century, when the town center featured railroad and trolley car lines going in three different directions.

By-gone shoe factories, burned churches and Main Street businesses, civic celebrations, prominent citizens, old time Hudson High athletic teams, historic Assabet River floods and a devastating 1938 hurricane are among the images in the book's pages. A four-page introduction is a condensed history of the town called Feltonville, until it was incorporated as the town of Hudson in 1866.

Copies are available at the Hudson Historical Society museum, Hudson Paper Store, office of Town Clerk Joan Wordell in Town Hall, several on-line bookstores. For more information go online at www.arcadiapublishing.com.

Reseña del editor

Hudson began in 1699 as a cluster of small industries in the northern part of the town of Marlborough, situated by the swift-flowing Assabet River. Through the years, the industries prospered and the largely immigrant workers began to bring their families to America from overseas. New homes were soon built for these families as stores, churches, and schools sprang up around town. As this factory neighborhood progressed and became self-reliant, residents petitioned the state government to become their own independent town. Because of their efforts, the town of Hudson was incorporated in 1866.
