Title: Photographer tells story of Seabrook with images
Author: Joey Ciamacco

Ruth Burke was chosen to create a book for Arcadia Publishing s Images of America series.
The book, entitled Seabrook, features more than 200 photos of Seabrook s beautiful lakes, hiking trails, quaint shops and breakfast inns. It also reaches back into history to the toils of the Attakaps and Karankawas Indian tribes to the treasure-laden tales of French pirate Jean Lafitte.
Using her own large collection of area photographs wasn t enough, so Burke sought out Seabrook City Councilman Don Holbrook for help in acquiring older photos. Holbrook was instrumental in assisting Burke in the extensive research needed for the project.
Burke is the owner of the Seaside Gallery where she sells photographic art and provides custom framing services. She has been a resident of Seabrook since the 1970s.
The book will be available at Barnes and Noble on Oct. 25, and Burke will have her first book signing at Merlion Restaurant at 1301 Fourth St. in Seabrook on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Autographed copies of the book will also be available at her Seabrook shop, the Seaside Gallery located at 204 Kirby Blvd., and on her website at www.art-photography-nature.com"
Seabrook enjoys a prime location on Galveston Bay at the outflow of Clear Creek. Formerly a Spanish land grant known as Morris Cove, the town began to assume its modern shape in 1895 when Seabrook Sydnor purchased part of the Morris league and platted the town site. Brothers Albert and Ernest Fay founded the Seabrook Shipyard in 1938, which went on to build submarine chasers and rescue boats during World War II. The year 1961 was a landmark moment for Seabrook: Hurricane Carla hit on September 11, and a week later, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that its Manned Spaceflight Center would be built in nearby Clear Lake, launching a period of accelerated growth. Fearing annexation by Houston or La Porte, Seabrook leaders took steps toward incorporation that same year. Today Seabrook is listed on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and is part of the third largest boating community in the United States.
