Originally published in 1938 this book was compiled from diaries, letters and recollections of those who saw active service in the infantry of the British Army during World War I. Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves, both officers in the same regiment, became famous when their influential accounts of service were published in the 1920s. This work is partly a counteraction to their views. Keith Simpson provides the background in a new introduction.
