Coronation Day, 2 June 1953, provided the perfect
excuse for nationwide celebration. Every town and
village in Britain was filled with street parties,
pageants, feasting and dancing, with multicoloured
decorations flying from every lamp post and road
sign.
Despite the struggle of everyday life in the 1950s, for
many people the Coronation celebrations were a sign
that Britain was at last emerging from the grim years
of austerity and drabness which had followed the
Second World War. People everywhere watched the
glittering processions and ceremonies on 9-inch black
and white television sets, or listened to Richard
Dimbleby describe the scenes on 'steam' radio.
To create this book, Kenneth and Valerie McLeish
have asked people throughout Britain and the
Commonwealth for their personal memories of the
1950s, and, specifically, of what they were doing on
Coronation Day. The result is a vivid tapestry of
voices, telling hilarious, sad, colourful and endlessly
surprising stories of ordinary life, and of what people
were doing and thinking on the day the young Queen
was crowned.
Kenneth McLeish has written more than 70 books
including The Good Reading Guide and Shakespeare's
People A-Z. Recent productions of plays which he has
translated include Ibsen's Peer Gynt at the National
Theatre, Sophocles' Electra at the RSC and Feydeau's
Pig in a Poke by the Oxford Stage Company. Valerie
McLeish is a researcher, editor and author. Together
Kenneth and Valerie McLeish have published The
Listener's Guide to Classical Music, The First Oxford
Companion to Music, This is Music, The Good Reading
Guide to Murder The Good Reading Guide to Biography
and Autobiography and The Guide to Bible Quotations.

Reseña del editor:
A collection of stories and souvenirs from all over Britain, from those who were actually in Westminster Abbey on Coronation Day to those who crowded into the sitting-rooms of the country's few television owners. The book's main theme is that in a very real sense the post-war period began with Coronation Day - the pageantry and the ceremonial, the parades and the bands, occasioned a patriotic fervour that many would not forget.
