To many people, the "Evening Standard" art critic, Brian Sewell, is the most well-informed, articulate and consistently direct of contemporary art critics, a man who gives praise when he thinks it is due but who does not equivocate in his condemnation of the second-rate. Such people enjoy his prose and revere him as a lone voice in an otherwise crazy world. For others, principally members of the contemporary art establishment, Sewell's reviews frequently deride their art and the exhibitions they put on. On 5th January 1994 the "Evening Standard" published a letter from members of this group demanding that Sewell be sacked on grounds of philistinism and "social and sexual hypocrisy". Thus began a furore which still continues - Sewell and his opponents traded insults on television in the course of which Sewell was described as vicious, ill-informed, misogynist and homophobic. The editor of the "Evening Standard" and hundreds of readers, came out in support of Sewell. Two months later Sewell was voted Art Critic of the Year for the second year running by his fellow journalists.

About the book >.>.> The Reviews That Caused the Rumpus: And Other Pieces is a compilation of over 100 reviews and articles by Brian Sewell, the Evening Standard's prominent art critic. Renowned for his insightful and articulate commentary, Sewell offers a candid critique of contemporary art that has garnered both acclaim and criticism. His distinctive prose is appreciated by many for its wit and elegance, positioning him as a voice of reason amidst the chaos of modern artistic expressions. However, his confrontational stance has led to severe backlash from the contemporary art establishment, eliciting passionate responses from both supporters and detractors.A notable incident occurred on 5 January 1994, when a letter from prominent figures within the art community called for Sewell?s dismissal, accusing him of philistinism and hypocrisy. This sparked a heated debate that has persisted over the years, as Sewell and his critics exchanged pointed remarks on television. Despite facing accusations of being vicious and ill-informed, Sewell?s supporters remained steadfast, leading to him receiving the Press Award for Critic of the Year twice?an accomplishment unmatched by any other art critic. This collection not only features reviews that instigated significant controversy but also includes pieces that celebrate Sewell's unique perspective on art. Readers can expect an exploration of his critical eye, which challenges established norms and invites contemplation on the state of contemporary art. With a mixture of ire and admiration, Sewell?s writing reveals the complexities of artistic expression and the discourse surrounding it, making this book essential for those interested in the intersection of art criticism and cultural commentary.
