No Jacket. ### Shire Publication: Carnival Glass by Raymond Notley No.104 1990 #### ## THIS BOOK: Classified AS NEW: This is the 1990 edition; it was first published in 1983, the second in 1986 and the third in 1990. There is a wealth of information on carnival glass. Illustrated with descriptions, a fantastic collection, and a wonderful history. There is information on places to visit. This book and a lot of others in my inventory are from private collectors and kept as new.## ## Full colour cover, satin finish. Full information where further reading and visiting is available. ## ## CARNIVAL GLASS: Hand-pressed glass with an added lustrous metallic iridescence was a great success when first marketed in the USA in 1908. It was equally popular in Britain from 1909 and by 1911, had spread throughout the British Empire. Its exotic patterns, variety of shapes and dazzling iridescence delighted purchasers up to the early 1930s. Carnival glass was used only briefly as a prize at funfairs, so the name is ill-deserved. The surface lustre of prime examples of this gläss is remarkably similar to that of Tiffany and Carder, but the art glass trade denounced it vehemently, and most glass authors and experts dismissed it as 'cheap rubbish% But Carnival glass is now emerging from the obscurity of scorn that has surrounded it for over fifty years. This book gives a brief history of the glass and guides the reader through the confusion of misinformation and muddling about the subject.## ## Raymond Notley is a member of Sotheby's staff and is a tutor for Educational Studies, teaching primarily on the three-month course on decorative arts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He has a wide knowledge of and deep affection for the decorative arts, particularly of the period since. 1800. He is a specialist teacher of the techniques and design of glass and ceramics of that period. He has studied and researched worldwide. The wide scope of Sotheby's resources and educational activities also allows him to study, read and teach on a diverse range of subjects. He is the leading researcher and world authority on the history and design of carnival glass. As a glass historian, he has published many articles, read papers for the Glass Circle, and lectured for the Corning Museum of Glass.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects. Shire books cover antiques and collectables, motoring and rural history, archaeology and Egyptology, architecture, industrial history and many other topics.## ## They were founded in 1962 by John Rotheroe, the company based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The first book published by Shire Publications was Discovering East Suffolk, a 24-page guide to the county through a series of five motoring routes and a gazetteer of the main towns and villages. They were given away to visitors via coach operators, local churches and tourist information points. The book was successful, and Shire publishers decided to sell the second edition because free copies were being sold, setting the template for the future of Shire. Over the following years, Shire expanded its Discovering series and launched several new series, including Lifelines, Shire Albums, Shire Archaeology and Shire Egyptology. ## ## In 2008, Shire began a revamp of its list. It announced that the former Shire series, including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library, which would retain and expand on the numbering system used by the old Album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
