Biografía del autor:
Peter L. Smith, Elwood White's collaborator on "Wings Across the Water: Victoria's Flying Heritage", was a professor of classics at the University of Victoria for many years. In addition to scholarly publications, he has written a history of the University of Victoria and is co-author of "Ghosts on the Grade: Hiking and Biking Abandoned Railways on Southern Vancouver Island".

The bridges and buildings of the navigation companies, the impressive aqueducts and the ingenious systems of locks are all worthy of study by industrial archaeologists and waterway enthusiasts alike, for they are both a link with the past and a part of today's landscape. In most cases, they have worn well, and age has enhanced their beauty. This book describes and illustrates these permanent reminders of the canal age and details the different types of stone and brickwork used and particular designs, building practices and finishes. It provides the reader with the basis for a fascinating interest and will make exploring waterways all the more enjoyable. ## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects.
