Floor tiles with a wealth of different patterns and designs were used during the Middle Ages in churches, cathedrals, royal palaces and the homes of wealthy citizens.

Though many medieval tiles disappeared during restorations in the nineteenth century, thousands remain in cathedrals, parish churches and former abbeys, and in the British Museum's extensive collection.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Hans van Lemmen is President of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society, and has lectured widely on the history of tiles and other ceramics. An established author on the subject, among his titles for Shire are Victorian Tiles, Coade Stone and Ceramic Roofware.
