The early religions of Rome have been the subject of perennial fascination, and considerable study. Roman religion has conveniently been seen as conservative and ritualistic, whose observances were kept for reasons of pragmatism rather than inspired by emotion and faith. This view is challenged in this book, which reflects the new interest and excitement in studies of Roman religion.
The ten authors deploy a variety of approaches - archaeological, historical, literary, numismatic, epigraphic and anthropological - to present new and important ideas about Roman Religion from temples and oracles to games and votive deposits. Religious experience in Rome is seen in the context of developments throughout Italy and the Greek world, and is understood as taking place in real locations and at real times, each different form the generations before and after. The book is enhanced by methodological concern to make use of evidence from material and documentary sources, as well as by its wide chronological coverage. It includes work by leading British and European scholars, and makes accessible to a wide audience the most recent discoveries and ideas in the field.
