MATERIALS looks at the variety of materials and their properties, while CHANGING MATERIALS considers materials' different states and the effects of heat. The author, Peter Riley, has developed the project in a classroom context working with reception and Year 1 classes. He has incorporated aspects of both KS1 curriculum and the desirable outcomes for younger learning and, by testing, ensured the text is appropriate for use in literacy as well as science. Illustrated in full colour with photographs, most of which has been specially commissioned for the books.

Peter Riley taught science at secondary level for many years and still pays regular visits to the classroom, both at primary and secondary level. His many publications include the Straightforward Science series for Franklin Watts. A text book he wrote for John Murray won the TES Senior Information Book Award in 2000. He lives in Burnley, Lancashire.
