In his study of Christmas Carols, Mark Lawson-Jones has managed in 128 pages to survey a wide range of historical detail. Welsh customs are not overlooked, and readers will enjoy the chapter on wassailing that also tells the story of Mari Lwyd and relates local customs that still prevail on the Chepstow border. Most importantly the book reflects fresh research, not only on the possible origin of 'the Partridge in a Pear Tree' and the twelve days of Christmas, but that also traces the history of the words and music of 'O Come all ye faithful'.
