In 13 chapters, editor Shlapentokh (sociology, Michigan State U.) and his colleagues explore international attitudes toward the US as the century and its deep ideological tensions begin to unspool. Taking the events of Sept. 11, 2001, as a backdrop, the contributors analyze not only their country's current attitudes, but also the history of those attitudes and the factors including economic, political, and religious that have changed them. One point of the work is that America's role as the single superpower is so ingrained that other countries can't avoid taking some position on it. The nations examined are Germany, Russia, Colombia, China, Egypt, India, and Lithuania. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
