When first introduced in the 1997 Corvette, GM's LS1 engine shook the performance world and achieved instant fame. Its combination of massive power, light weight and impressive fuel economy set new precedents for performance engines-and continues to do so generation after generation. The latest version, the supercharged LS9, makes some 638 hp from just 6.2 liters, far eclipsing even the mightiest big-blocks from the muscle car era--while meeting modern standards for emissions and fuel economy. It's no wonder, then, that the LSX and LS-Series engines have become some of the most popular for high-performance applications. For those who want to build or modify their LS-Series engine, this book provides the most detailed and extensive instructions ever offered for engine buildup and assembly. Whatever your performance goals might be, How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines shows you what modifications are needed and how to make them. Premier LS engine technician Joseph Potak addresses every question that might come up, covering topics including crankshafts, connecting rods and piston assemblies, cylinder heads, camshafts, valvetrain, block choices, machine work and modifications, and setting up ring and bearing clearances for particular uses. In short, this book is the ultimate resource for building the ultimate LS-Series engine.

Joseph Potak is a professional LS-series engine specialist and technician. He works for Texas Speed and Performance, catering to the performance needs of owners of LSX-equipped vehicles. Joseph is an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified Master Technician and has also completed GM Factory Training pertaining to the LSX-Gen III engine family. His work has appeared in numerous magazines and can also be spotted at the dragstrip, powering various LSX setups he has helped build throughout the years. In his free time, Joseph volunteers as a Forum Director within the LS1Tech.com Community. Ironically, and despite his “LSX-Only” mindset, he recently built and races a street-legal, 9-second turbo Mustang.
GM's LS1 engine shook the performance world when it was introduced in the 1997 Corvette. It set a new precedent for massive power, light weight, and impressive fuel economy. Often referred to as the Generation III engine, it (and its most recent iteration, the Gen IV) is the high-water mark for performance V-8 engines. The latest version, the LS9, makes some 638 hp from just 6.2 liters, far eclipsing even the mightiest big-blocks from the muscle car era. And it does so while meeting modern emissions requirements and delivering respectable fuel economy.
With these credentials, it is no wonder that the LS-series engines are among the most popular engines for high-performance applications. They respond well to modifications and can handle massive power, whether naturally-aspirated, nitrous-injected, or by way of forced induction.
How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines shows what modifications are needed to acheive any performance goal you desire. Topics include block selection and modifications, crankshaft and piston assemblies, cylinder heads, camshafts, valvetrain, intake manifolds, fuel system, and header selection. This is the ultimate resource to build the ultimate LSX engine!
