He received the Institute of Navigation's 1985 Superior Achievement Award for outstanding performance as a practicing navigator.

Burch has written for several boating magazines, including Sea Kayaker, on the subject of marine navigation and weather. He is a former Fulbright Scholar and a former member of the graduate faculty at the University of Washington; he holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas. With more than 65,000 miles of blue-water sailing and navigation experience behind him, Burch devotes his time to teaching and writing about navigation. He's also a kayaker.
