Simon, a journalist and editor of the French review, Politique Internationale, was directly involved over the 25 years that her husband built his collection of letters from artists the Pierre F. Simon collection, which is now in the New York Public Library. She was joined by Rosenfeld (author of 19 books on art, architecture, and cultural history) in the preparation of this intriguing volume. About 40 letters, from almost as many artists (a few have more than one) including Manet, Bonnard, Pissarro, Cassatt, Renoir, Gauguin, Modigliani, to name but a few are presented in facsimile, along with a transcription in the original language and an English translation. Each artist is profiled in an essay, which is supported with color reproductions some self portraits, some paintings of other subjects.
