This great city atlas, edited by Georg Braun and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg, eventually contained 546 images ~ bird's~eye views and maps of cities from all over the world. Braun, a cleric who lived in Cologne, was assisted in his project by Abraham Ortelius, whose Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570 was the first true atlas. The Civitates was intended as a companion for the Theatrum, but was designed to be more popular in approach. Franz Hogenberg had engraved most of the plates for Ortelius's Theatrum, and may have been responsible for originating Civitates but he was not the only engraver. Many different artists and cartographers worked on it, the most significant of whom was Antwerp artist Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel~and after his death his son Jakob. He produced most of the original material for the Spanish and Italian towns and reworked and modified those of other contributors. Braun added figures in local dress. For the modern reader the images reproduced in Cities of the Renaissance World provide a remarkable view of the period from Cuzco in South America to Calcutta in India. With some 70 cities illustrated, Cities of the Renaissunce World interprets what can be seen in the 16th century maps, how that differs from today's cities, and analyses the other information ~ from costumes to heraldry ~ that each of the maps shows. Coverage includes: Alexandria, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Augsburg, Avignon, Bergen, Besancon, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Brussels, Cairo, Calcutta, Constantinople, Cracow, Cuzco, Delft, Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Edinburgh, Exeter, Florence, Frankfurt, Galway, Genoa, Grenada, Hamburg, Jerusalem, Lancaster, Leipzig, Lisbon, London, Lubeck, Lublin, Mantua, Marseilles, Metz, Mexico City, Milan, Moscow, Naples, Nimes, Odense, Papa, Paris, Prague, Richmond, Rome, Rostock, Rouen, Seville, Shrewsbury, Strasbourg, Toledo, Valladolid, Venice, Verona, Vienna, Visby, Warsaw, York, and Zurich.
