Happy with her successful disguise and the freedom that posing as a man brings, she boards a ship with Matto for the New World, but their plans are foiled when pirates attack. Matto convinces them that he and Kate will be useful, so they join the outlaws, and Kate learns about the vagaries of pirate life the hard way. Her rowdy companions care only for treasure and pleasure, whereas Kate yearns to better her life and plots her escape.
