Assessment programs and practices often are proclaimed as central components of the community college enterprise. However, the myths that have become part of the assessment lore are sometimes more widespread than the realities. Assessment and testing, while necessary and worthwhile activities, can be confusing, expensive undertakings that may or may not contribute to the effectiveness of an institution. This volume of New Directions for Community Colleges addresses the realpolitik of assessment and testing from a variety of perspectives and examines the possible shortcomings, threats, and benefits inherent in each. The practical considerations, strategies, recommendations, and assessment methodologies presented in this issue serve as a guide to assessment and testing for the novice as well as the seasoned professional.
