Amid the general tech collapse, there's one rising star: Wi-Fi, wireless networking. Its sales are going through the roof and its costs have plummeted. Why? Because where computers are useful, networks are usually useful too. Lots of people are buying Wi-Fi for their offices and homes. The only problem with traditional wired networks is their wires: you've got to run lots of Ethernet wires in brand new buildings (expensive), or retrofit existing buildings (very expensive). The solution is wireless networking and Wi-Fi - 802.11b, to use its official name - is far and away the most popular wireless solution today. And Wi-Fi can service anything from two home computers to the whole Stanford University campus. There are many extraordinary ramifications to this technology, which are explored in this book through case studies and interviews. You'll find honest, clear step-by-step instructions on how to install various kinds of Wi-Fi networks - in your home or office. If you want to understand why wireless-networking technology is important, and where it is going in the future, then this is the book for you! How to create a wireless network between your home computers for less than $200. Stay connected to other computers and printers anywhere within your Wi-Fi broadcasting area. Surf the Internet with your laptop on the patio - no wires necessary. Learn to extend your existing wire network, or build a new Wi-Fi network from scratch. Numerous case studies show you all the ways that Wi-Fi is used today. Security, antennas, Wi-Fi in coffee shops, airports, universities, large offices-all the answers you need to take advantage of this exciting, affordable technology.
