Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Unpaginated. Usual ex-ibrary markings, including a significant tear to the first page where a donor label was removed. The library also added tape reinforcement to volume one, inside and out, as the large format (15" x 12") places considerable pressure on the binding. Covers of both books are well worn, especially at corners and spine ends. Lib Editors devote about 2 dozen pages to each town, including maps. "An undertaking of this kind is wholly novel. It will make it possible, as it is gradually completed, to carry out an enthralling investigation in comparative topography: it is, as it were, the anatomy of towns which we shall be able to see accurately displayed before us, from the complete town plan, through streets, squares and crossroads, down to the smallest of the cells which make it up, the merest plot of land which has a building on it. It will make it possible to study the development of these living organisms scientifically, and to classify the different types. The legitimate curiosities of scholars are not, however the only interests to be involved. Nor is it only lovers of the past eho will be glad to get a faithful picture of the ancient heart of towns. Ours is an era of extraordinary town development. Tomorrow's urban treasures run a great risk of losing in charm and in human value what they gain in expansion. Our children run a great risk -psychologists are increasingly aware of this - of growing up joylessly in soulless cities. The old centres of our towns, wher the most precious of the ancient buildings cluster, make up the element peculiar to each town, by which it is differentiated from every other. This is a touristic treasure-house - and that is a consideration which ought to weigh with even the most prosaic minds, at a time when the tourist trade is developing to such a marked degree. What is more, it is a human treasure-house, and one which any concern for the future bids us reconstitute and save: atlases of urban history provide an indispensable tool for this work - and only an exceedingly short-sighted realism could prevent us from appreciating the work's importance." - Philippe Wolff in his preface. Volume 2 incorporates much of Elizabeth Ralph's previously unpublished essay on 'The Topographical Development of the City up to 1800". Oversized volumes may require additional shipping.
