Professor Stokes stellt eine neue Art des Lesens von Platons Dialogen vor. Warum sollte Platon überhaupt Dialoge geschrieben haben, anstatt Abhandlungen? Das Argument der Dialoge liegt in ihrem Drama – im Zusammenspiel von Persönlichkeit, Beruf und Glauben und im Schnitt und Schub der sokratischen Dialektik. Indem er systematisch untersucht, wo jede Partei des Arguments in jeder aufeinanderfolgenden Phase der Diskussion steht, zeigt der Autor, dass jeder dieser zu diskutierenden Dialoge eine zielstrebige Konsistenz hat und dass die literarischen Passagen dazu beitragen, die philosophische Botschaft zu formen und zu vermitteln.
