Beattie, an engineer, served as a NASA manager from 1963 to 1973 and observed the behind-the-scenes struggles involved in gaining acceptance for including science activities in the Apollo missions. Now, of course, scientific payloads are a routine part of space shuttle missions; Beattie describes the objections that had to be overcome within the NASA culture before this could happen. He concentrates on the staffers as well as the scientists, inside and outside government, who saw that beyond the technical and political achievements of the initial Apollo landing, huge scientific benefits could be found in the historic undertaking. Donald A. Beattie is a former NASA engineer who has also worked with the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. He currently works as a private consultant. He is the author of History and Overview of Solar Heat Technologies.
