Old Niagara on the Lake was first published in 1971 by the University of Toronto Press in hardcover, bound in white cloth, running to 152 pages. The book is illustrated with 58 pen and ink sketches by architectural draughtsman Robert Montgomery, depicting the historical buildings of Niagara-on-the-Lake in their original form, accompanied by maps. Peter John Stokes was the restoration architect most closely associated with Niagara-on-the-Lake's built heritage ? the guiding professional behind a significant number of the local restorations that have made the town one of the most extensively preserved historic communities in North America. His authorship of this book therefore carries a particular authority: he is describing buildings he had studied and in many cases restored firsthand. The book is organized as a practical guide in three tours, designed for the visitor as much as the armchair traveller, with Stokes selecting 58 properties and providing detailed historical commentary alongside each of Montgomery's sketches. The nomenclature system Stokes employs is a multi-name approach that records the ownership history of each property rather than identifying buildings by a single name or address alone ? a system he explains within the text and that distinguishes this volume from later works covering similar ground. The sketches depict the buildings as they historically appeared rather than in their current state, giving the book a documentary value independent of its use as a guide. Niagara-on-the-Lake is Ontario's oldest surviving planned community and the site of Canada's first capital under the Constitutional Act of 1791, and those layers of historical significance run through every property Stokes describes. The Canadian Book Review Annual noted that later competing volumes on the same subject overlapped with Stokes's coverage by more than fifty percent while dismissing him in less than a sentence ? a backhanded tribute to the foundational importance of this book in the literature on the town's architectural heritage.
