Inhaltsangabe

A history of the Toronto General Hospital offers, in many ways, a window on a broader history of time and place. In this fascinating and authoritative account, J.T.H. Connor traces the hospital's development over its two-hundred-year evolution, describing how its mandate to 'do good' meant constant change and adjustment to the prevailing social, religious, fiscal, medical, and government values.

Using trustee minutes, medical journals, newspapers, and government reports, along with correspondence, photographs, and reminiscences of trustees, nurses, doctors, and patients, Doing Good presents the history of the Toronto General Hospital in four phases. From its conception in 1797 until the early 1870s, it functioned as a charitable institution. This phase captures the nature of sickness and health care in Upper Canada, showing how the hospital acted initially as a clearing station for sick immigrants before being recognized as a provincial public charity and receiving stable government funding. From the 1870s, it won praise as a model hospital in North America, and, although officially a public charity until the 1930s, it attracted middle-class patients who paid for private rooms. In 1913, its major new quarters adjacent to the University of Toronto enhanced its international reputation as a teaching hospital, a reputation that grew over the war years to include a high profile in research excellence, most notably in cancer care and modern technology. By the 1960s the hospital was run as a public hospital before its most recent transformation in the late 1990s into a hospital mega-corporation - the University Health Network - that absorbed three other hospitals: the Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Doctors Hospital.

This work is the most comprehensive analysis of any Canadian hospital or health care institution yet to appear. All the more remarkable is the fine balance Connor maintains in his use of exhaustive archival research and compelling anecdotal material. Broad in scope and meticulous in detail, Doing Good brings vividly to life the events and turmoil in the Toronto General Hospital's long history.

Winner of the Chalmers Award, presented by the Champlain Society.
