This major text offers a critical reappraisal of the contemporary practice of cultural studies. It focuses in particular on the contribution of cultural studies to the understanding of media, communications and popular cultures in contemporary societies. The contributors, an outstanding group of internationally acclaimed scholars, examine topics such as: the different strands of cultural studies and how they are developed; whether cultural studies is a coherent discipline; tensions and debates within cultural studies; alternative or related approaches to contemporary media and society; and the movement by cultural studies revisionists towards more empirical and sociological modes of analysis.

Gutes Ex.; Einband etwas berieben. - Englisch. - Marjorie Ferguson is Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Journalism, University of Maryland, USA. . This timely and major text reassesses the contemporary practice of cultural studies. In recent years cultural studies perspectives have proliferated through a range of traditional academic disciplines, providing a fertile source of new ideas beyond the sphere of the academy. Simultaneously, cultural studies has itself been subject to critical scrutiny. Cultural Studies in Question draws on an outstanding group of internationally acclaimed scholars representing a broad cross-section of perspectives in media theory and communication studies. Focusing on cultural studies' contribution to the understanding of media, communication and popular cultures in contemporary societies, this book also examines: the different strands of cultural studies, their sources, and whether a coherent project exists in cultural studies today / tensions and debates within cultural studies, and those between cultural studies and alternative or related approaches to contemporary media and society / the move by cultural studies revisionists towards more empirical and sociological modes of analysis Cultural Studies in Question provides a benchmark for the state of media and cultural analysis for academics and researchers. It also offers critical and provocative appraisal that will stimulate further reflection, understanding and insight among students of media, communications, journalism, popular culture and cultural studies.
