Long described as lost, this report was the result of Mao Zedong's investigation in 1930 of the people, economy, society, and history of the obscure rural county of Xunwu in South China. An extraordinary document that far exceeds in scope and depth Mao's other investigative reports on rural China. The report is a rich source of information on rural administration, commerce, transportation, communication, education, land tenure, taxation, religion, diverse social relations and practices and struggle in one obscure area that was a microcosm of China. Thompson has translated and presented Mao's report with extensive notes. The book is designed to welcome non-specialists, and it will be welcomed by those interested in the Chinese countryside, comparative revolution, and historical anthropology. Because Mao's report on Xunwu was part of a revolutionary program, the report raises complex questions about academic and activist readings of social realities.

Long described as lost, the report was published in China for the first time in 1982, when it was used by Deng Xiaoping to bolster his claim to power by demonstrating that he was following Mao in "seeking truth from facts." The report is an extraordinary document, the earliest and most extensive surviving example of Mao's local investigations. It has the pithiness and spontaneity of field notes, and covers a wide array of subjects: administration, commerce, transportation, communication, education, land tenure, taxation, religion, and diverse social practices, including prostitution and child selling. The report is not only a record of Mao's efforts to link a local revolution with a national revolution but also a record, in absorbing detail, of what revolution and counterrevolution meant to ordinary men and women. The abundance of facts makes the report a revealing record of dailv life in rural China during one of the most wrenching transformations in Chinese history. The Xunwu report opens a window on the process by which, at the local level, Mao and the Chinese Communist Party transformed the disasters of the late 1920'S, notably the split with the Kuomintang and the failure of an urban~oriented revolutionary strategy, into the triumphal establishment of a momentarily secure revolutionary base in Jiangxi in 1931. A key element in the CCP's ultimate rise to power was its mastery and manipulation of local communities, which would not have been possible without painstaking local investigations. Above all, the report can be placed in the context of Mao's own intellectual development. This document was produced at an important moment in Mao's attempt to adapt Marxism to Chinese reality. The kind of investigation he made, and the insights that resulted, would become an important part of this ongoing effort. The book is illustrated with maps and twelve pages of photographs, many of which were taken by an American missionary in Xunwu and are previously unpublished. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 7021201
