This is the last in The Making of Modern Freedom Series , initiate by J.H. Hexter, who saw freedom as "purely Western in origin" and only found elsewhere "in consequence of Western influence." However the editor of this volume, Kirby (history, Harvard U.), suggests that China has "its own universal and historical conceptions of obligations and freedoms" and feels freedom in China should be studied on its own terms as well as in comparison with the West. To that end, he presents 11 papers that explore such topics as Confucian concepts of individual moral autonomy, economic freedom in late Imperial China, freedoms and customs in the making of civil law in the Nationalist era, discourses of dissent, and the meaning of freedom in marriage.
