David Getz is the award-winning author of the middle-grade novels Thin Air and Almost Famous, and the nonfiction books Frozen Girl and Life on Mars. When not writing, Mr. Getz works as an elementary-school principal in New York City.

Peter McCarty is the Caldecott Honor-winning author and illustrator of Hondo and Fabian. He also teamed up with David Getz on Frozen Girl, Life on Mars, and Purple Death. Mr. McCarty lives with his wife and two children in Upstate New York.

Gr. 4-6. Getz's account of the 1991 discovery of the Ice Man, a mummified shepherd from the Copper Age found in the Italian Alps, not only describes the scientific process of determining the age of the body, but also how scientists used the remains to gain valuable clues about how humans lived at the time. As smoothly written as Getz's fiction (Thin Air and Almost Famous), the book deals with questions designed to keep readers interested till the very last page. It is also well illustrated: full-color photographs and delicate, hazy drawings enhance the mysterious air of the text, and the eerie jacket art will definitely attract browsers. A detailed glossary, a pronunciation guide, and a bibliography are appended. Chris Sherman

Grade 4-7-Young readers should find this book fascinating, as Getz describes the discovery, recovery (barely!), and scientific study of this man who died approximately 5,000 years ago. The clear, concise, and interesting text with carefully rendered interpretive illustrations and four full-color photos will answer many youngsters' questions and perhaps stimulate them to pursue some matters in greater depth. However, some dissonance occurs between the somewhat sophisticated vocabulary and the relatively simple sentence structure, but it should not be a major problem for those captivated by the subject.
