Marsha Hayles' love of the beach inspired her to write Beach Play. A former English teacher, Marsha lives in Pittsford, New York, with her family. This is her first book for children.

Hideko Takahashi remembers playing in the surf of the Sea of Japan as a child. She lives in Los Angeles, California. This is her first picture book.

PreSAAn outing to the beach is depicted in this charming ode to summer fun. Rhymed couplets convey the many joys of a day at the seaside. The spirited text matches the energy levels of the children featured in the acrylic illustrations. Preschoolers of both genders and varied ethnicities are shown sunning, romping, climbing, eating, and generally being as bouncy as the beach balls with which they play. The characters' heads do in fact resemble beach balls. Takahashi uses primary shapes to depict the action of the text. Warm, sunny colors contrasted by cool blues delineate earth, sky, and water. Although the story line is not substantial, youngsters will identify with this child's-eye view of a visit to the ocean. In this cheerful book, a debut for both author and artist, a dexterous poem about a family's day at the beach provides a staccato, rhymed accompaniment to the gently prankish humor and skewed perspectives of energetic acrylic illustrations. The round-faced heroine and her spotted dog (not mentioned in the text) dig holes in the sand ("Smacking/ Packing/ Sandy/ Stacking"), they have lunch ("Blanket spreading/ Picnic lunching/ Sandwiches made for/ Beachy munching"), and after a long day in the sun they fall sound asleep in the back seat of the family car ("Backseat nesting/ Ocean gleaming/ Seaside resting/ Beach day dreaming"). Although the slim plot alone might not sustain a wiggly reader's interest, Takahashi embellishes the text with plenty of wave-drenched action, and Hayles briskly propels the narrative with infectious rhythms and unpredictable language. Young readers will especially enjoy the endearing spotted dog, who not only borrows a red Frisbee from a napping canine but earnestly enters into every activity. A choice summertime read. Ages 3-7.

Hayles's salute to a day at the beach is tendered in short, high-stepping rhymes: ``Splashing/Dashing/Big wave crashing.'' The minimalist story concerns a small girl and her beachside endeavors: playing in the sand and surf, eating lunch, lolling in the water (where she finds a bottle with a message), and preparing to leave. A pleasing pace and energy inform these pages; firmly wedded to them and adding immeasurably to the day-at-the-beach atmosphere are Takahashi's acrylic illustrations, bright, immediate, and full of unusual perspectives. In a generous final touch, tucked away on the copyright page in the back, the message in the bottle is revealed: It's a note sent from the other side of the ocean, from a child in search of a pen pal, and signed ``Hideko.''
