SNAP, SNAP! There was that noise again, and it sounded closer. Little Raccoon looked around quickly and headed for the cattails near the stream. She tried to be extra brave.
A comforting story about separation, being brave, and growing bigger

Erica Wolf is the author and illustrator of I Love You Just the Same, which School Library Journal praised as "an endearing picture book introduction to one year in a young cub's life, and a calming reminder of the constancy of parental love." Ms. Wolf spends time with animals every day, working at a local animal hospital. It was her love of animals-plus a childhood fear of the dark-that encouraged her to create Brave Little Raccoon. She lives in Yardley, Pennsylvania, with her husband.

PreSchool-Grade 1-Despite her mother's gentle reminder not to wander off, Little Raccoon follows a yellow leaf and loses her way in the dark. Feeling scared, she tries to work up courage for the trip home. Along the way, she is startled by various nocturnal creatures and grows more alarmed as a distant snapping and rustling noise gets closer. When she hears familiar chattering, she realizes that her mother has been following her tracks. Happily reunited, they head for their den and Little Raccoon vows to stay close to home. This story is a familiar one, and Wolf draws out the suspense and anxiety of the protagonist's plight. Children need reassurance that their parents will always find them; however, this version of that lesson is clouded by the fact that the mother seems to frighten rather than comfort her little one. A muted color palette and dry brush strokes are used to soften the slightly scary double-page nighttime scenes. For a more reassuring lost-and-found tale, stick with Jane Simmons's Come Along, Daisy! PreS-K. Mother Raccoon tells her child not to wander too far alone in the dark, but Little Raccoon becomes lost in the strange and scary forest. Beautiful, double-page acrylic pictures with thick black-and-white lines show the small creature blending in with the bare fall trees and as she encounters a bullfrog, a family of opossums, and more in the shadowy night. The animals she meets are no real threat, though Little Raccoon shivers when she hears an owl hoot and wonders what that "rustle rustle" noise can be. It's comforting for both Little Raccoon and young listeners to learn, at the close of the book, that Mother has been following all the way. Preschoolers will recognize the thrilling sense of danger and also the coziness of home that gives Little Raccoon the strength to go on an adventure. Hazel Rochman
