Developmental Language Disorders: From Phenotypes to Etiologies is based on the recent conference of the same name sponsored by the Merrill Advanced Studies Center of the University of Kansas. In the past 10 years, considerable advances have taken place in our understanding of genetic and environmental influences on language disorders in children. Significant research in behavioral phenotypes, associated neurocortical processes, and the genetics of language disorders has laid the foundation for further breakthroughs in understanding the reasons for overlapping etiologies, as well as the unique aspects of some phenotypes. Too often the findings are disseminated in a fragmented way because of the discrete diagnostic categories of affectedness. This volume attempts to assimilate and integrate the findings of the transdisciplinary research toward a more coherent picture of behavioral descriptions, brain imaging studies, genetics, and intervention technologies in language impairment. The contributing authors are all scholars with active programs of research funded by the National Institutes of Health involving diverse clinical groups of children with language impairments.

Mabel L. Rice is an international authority on language disorders in children and the genetics of language acquisition. She is best known for her work on the morphosyntax of children with specific language impairment. At the University of Kansas, she holds an endowed chair in advanced studies and teaches in the Child Language Doctoral Program and the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing. For 20 years, Rice has been continuously funded by NIH for peer-reviewed programmatic research. She maintains an active research lab while also directing 3 of the 12 centers in the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies at the University of Kansas. In addition, Rice was recently awarded a core grant by the National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders at NIH, and established the Center for Biobehavioral Neurosciences in Communication Disorders.
Steven F. Warren directs both the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies and the Kansas Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Center. He is also a Professor of Human Development and Family Life. He was associated with Vanderbilt University's John F. Kennedy Center for Human Development for 17 years as a Professor of Special Education and Deputy Director before coming to the University of Kansas in 1999. Warren is internationally recognized for his contributions to understanding language development in children and leadership in the field of developmental disabilities. He has conducted extensive research on early communication and language intervention approaches and has published more than 100 papers, chapters, and books on these and related topics.
