Boyer, an anthropologist, worked for thirty-five years from the recollections of Narcissus Duffy Gayton, who is both co-author and the fourth generation. The narrative runs through Victorio's death, the twenty-seven-year Chiricahua imprisonment in Florida, Alabama and at Fort Sill, resettlement at Mescalero, the Silas John and Four Cross movement, boarding schools, and reservation life into the 1970s. Illustrated with family photographs, portraits and maps, including Apache villages and cultivated fields at Fort Sill adapted from Angie Debo's Geronimo.Virginia Shanta Klinekole (1924-2011) was elected president of the Mescalero Apache Tribe in 1959, the first woman elected to lead a major tribe in the United States, and went on to serve on the Tribal Council until 1986. She sat on the Tularosa and Mescalero Apache school boards and the New Mexico Indian Education Advisory Council, worked to preserve the Mescalero-Chiricahua language, and received the governor's award for outstanding New Mexican women in 1988.
