Trade Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Fourth Printing. xxx, 277pp, index, bibliography, bw ills, map. Or white card covers. Slight edge wear to covers, small brown stain on fore-edge. Out of colonial Natchitoches, in NW Louisiana, there emerged a colony founded by a family of freed slaves. Their plantations eventually encompassed 18000 acres of fertile soil, tilled by hundreds of slaves. Wealthy, cultured, deeply religious and highly capable they enjoyed the friendship and respect of the dominant white Creole society in which they lived. They too supported the Confederacy and suffered the depredations of war and the financial ruin of reconstruction. The equality procalimed by the Union robbed the colony of its special prestige, their white friends died and were replaced by a new geneation that looked upon all persons of color as a threat. This book tells the fascinating story of the Cane River Creole society. Size: 8vo. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 011955
