Written in the gothic tradition of James Dickey's Buckdancer's Choice, Brightwood contains thirty-eight poems set in the American South. This intellectual and emotionally powerful collection is an interplay of southern music, religion, and culture with nature. Driven by memories of life in the rural, segregated South, the poems seek out beauty in an attempt to stave off loneliness, pain, and loss. The lyrics are moving, the language crackles, and the past haunts every verse.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
R. T. Smith was raised in Georgia and North Carolina and now lives in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He is the author of twelve poetry collections--including Messenger, winner of the Library of Virginia's Literary Award for Poetry--and a book of short stories. Winner of the Salmon International Poetry Prize in Ireland and the Richard Hugo Award from Poetry Northwest, he is editor of the literary quarterly Shenandoah at Washington and Lee University.
