Mickle wurde aus einer wohlhabenden New Jersey-Familie geboren und war in seinem kurzen Leben (1822-1855) ein Anwalt von Camden und Philadelphia, Herausgeber von zwei Wochenzeitungen, einem Historiker, einem versierten Geiger und begeisterten Buchsammler, einem lokalen politischen Führer, etwas von einem Damenmann und einem begeisterten Beobachter seiner Gesellschaft und Zeiten. Im Alter von 22 Jahren war Miclke in die Politik eingetaucht, und seine Aktivitäten bieten nicht nur einen Blick in die täglichen lokalen Angelegenheiten, sondern auch in den Demokratischen Nationalkonvent von 1844. Er erzählt Treffen mit vielen prominenten Persönlichkeiten seines Tages, darunter die Präsidenten Van Buren, Tyler und Polk sowie die Schriftsteller Orestes Brownson und Ralph Waldo Emerson.

By the age of twenty-two Miclke had immersed himself in politics, and his activities provide a view not only into day-to-day local affairs but also into the Democratic National Convention of 1844.
