Sigmund Freud's role in the history and development of psychoanalysis continues to be the standard by which others are judged. For some, he is a radically iconoclastic figure, whose greatest contributions lie in his challenge to Freudian orthodoxy; for others, he is ultimately a classical analyst, who built on Freud's foundations.
