Inhaltsangabe

This anthology of autobiographical essays, in English and German, is written by academics and writers of German-Jewish background and presents a spectrum of emigration experiences from the Nazi empire of Greater Germany. When the authors succeeded in fleeing their homelands, they could take little money, they had few prospects, and they left behind families, friends, their native language, and ways of life. They were forced to enter into a world in which survival depended on the assistance of others as much as on their own ability to adjust to changes. Beyond their intrinsic interest as lived history, these retrospectives also point to experiences and problems that have been and will be shared by refugees from other times and other places.
