Han (mathematics, U. of Notre Dame) begins his introductory graduate textbook by addressing such questions as whether it really is necessary to classify partial differential equations and to employ different methods to discuss the different types, and why it is important to derive a priori estimates of solutions even before proving the existence of solutions. Students usually figure out the answers by the end of the course, he says, but this way is easier on them. He covers first-order differential equations, second-order partial differential equations, Laplace equations, heat equations, wave equations, and first-order differential systems.
